Franco D’Andrea was born in Merano in 1941 where at the age of 17 he started studying piano, having already studied trumpet and sax soprano before that age. In 1964 he recorded his fist records with Gato Barbieri with whom he collaborated for two years. In 1968 he formed the "Modern Art Trio" and later on he played with the Jazz-rock Group "Il Perigeo". In 1978 he formed a steady trio with Dodo Goya and Bruno Biriaco. At the same time he also started contemplating to perform as a piano soloist. In 1981 Franco D’Andrea formed a quartet with Tino Tracanna (Saxophone), Attilio Zanchi (Bass) and Gianni Cazzola (Drums). Later on Glenn Ferris (Trombone) and the percussionist Naco joined the group. This team was the nucleus for the do-day’s septet.
