PER UN PUGNO NELL’OCCHIO
M° De Masi composed and conducted an orchestral comment alternating between dramatic and comical passages enriched with delicious morriconian citations typical for the cult Leone movies. The record opens with gun shoots (reprising the opening credits style characteristic for some Leone westerns) that introduce “Titoli”, a funny theme with the great harmonica sound of Franco De Gemini accompanied by jewish’s harp, bell tolls, organ, harpsichord and fast vibe passages, followed by an epic Deguello for trumpet (Tr.1). This theme is reprised in a slower tempo yet with similar orchestration (Tr.2). The main theme, after a funny introduction, is developed in a dramatic and mysterious manner (Tr.3), reprised later in Tr.8. Another renditions of this particular theme include an epic ride for French horns (Tr.11), a joyful version with horns and electric bass (Tr.14), a version between romantic and dramatic (Tr.15), a march-style-version (Tr.16) and lastly a rhythmically-agitated one (Tr.17). The romantic side of the story is emphasized by a sweet theme for violin and orchestra (Tr.4). Francesco De Masi created a very varied score through a series of themes between comic and serious, like a Flamenco (Tr.5), a tango (Tr.6), suspense cues (Tr.7, Tr.18, Tr.19, Tr.20), burlesque music (Tr.12), a stunning Deguello reprising the mythic Morricone style (Tr.13, Tr.22). Another masterpiece from the Silver Age of the Italian Film Music, luckily rescued.

This unprecedented OST was written by Nico Fidenco and Luis Bacalov. In 2010, a 6:46 minute long suite was released by GDM Music in the box set "Nico Fidenco My first fifty years." Previously RCA had released a single, RCA (RCA VICTOR PM 45-3136) containing the songs "The Two Samurai" (“I due samurai”) and "Judo twist." Fidenco and Bacalov wrote a lively main dance score sung by a choir (Tr.1) which is reprised in an alternative version of the single (Tr.14) and changed in Tr.2. Despite the humor in the film, the OST is very orchestral and dramatic as it develops, with a recurring oriental feel (Tr.3, Tr.4). The authors put together a mystical holy melody (Tr.6) which is contrasted with many battle motifs (Tr.5, Tr.9, Tr.11, Tr.12).
Franco & Ciccio sing a short piece in a funny Sicilian-Chinese language (Tr.13). The music closes with the "Judo twist" from the fabulous American style orchestra (Tr.15).
We used the mono master tapes from the original recording session which allowed us to publish 40:51 minutes of music.

Carlo Savina wrote a brilliant OST where he used his talent to create a range of fun melodies. These include the absurd vocal effects of the Cantori Moderni (Tr.17, Tr.19, Tr.21, Tr.26) and wind instruments with dampers alternating with lounge pieces like Bossa (Tr.16), slow (Tr.25) and three fantastic danceable pieces including two wild shakes (Tr.20, Tr.23). We used the mono master tapes from the original recording session to release 32:46 minutes of music.

I DUE SANCULOTTI
The soundtrack of the film was entrusted to Maestro Umiliani, (1956-1984) a prolific author of soundtracks who was active from 1958 to 1984. He made his debut as a musical composer for film, in 1958 thanks to Mario Monicelli, who called him to compose the musical score for the movie “I soliti ignoti” (starring Totò, Vittorio Gassman, Marcello Mastroianni, Nino Manfredi). Given the success of the film, in the following years Umiliani was called by the great and good of Italian cinema: Dino Risi, Luigi Comencini, Nanni Loy and Luigi Zampa. His professionalism, preparation and researching of the great jazz masters made him one of the greatest composers.
His filmography spans virtually all genres. From comedies starring Totò or Franco and Ciccio to espionage, from westerns to thrillers, from documentaries to drama all the way up to horror.

Stelvio Cipriani composed a brilliant OST with an amusing recurring main score with a touch of beat style. The author recalls the score in different versions and alternates it with a love theme in Bossa tempo, and with adventure-style music with harp interventions for the gang of bandits who try to make life difficult for Franco & Ciccio.
For our CD, we used every note recorded at the time which was contained on the stereo master tapes from the original recording session.
