The story of the drama refers to a press article appearing in the papers well over one hundred years ago. They reported about the criminal activity of the Brigand Tiburzi who roamed the Maremma, the most southern part of Tuscany, and his foul work during the last decade of the 19th century. At the time, a war was raging between the Vatican State and Italy, and this province was a god-forsaken place, and an easy prey for highwaymen. Rich and cruel patricians and big landowners subjugated the peasants, who merely vegetated on the treshold of survival. Driven by a desperate, inner urge this simple-minded, insignificant, however brutal outlaw killed whoever he believed wronged him. But, as time passed, the deeds of this Italian Robin Hood heroized him and turned the rogue into a specimen of human kindness, a popular hero, one of those who gained for themselves the key to Olympus, where the pagan Gods and would-be-saints, equally bestowed with thaumaturgical power, live togheter in armony.
